What Signal Makes You Rewrite a Page Headline First?

When a page underperforms, what is the first signal that makes you rewrite the headline before touching layout or CTA? I usually start with clarity issues, message mismatch, or a bounce rate that stays stubborn after other fixes. I would like to know which signal you trust first.

My first signal is message mismatch: the ad or search result promises one thing, but the headline frames something broader or different. If the page gets qualified clicks but visitors leave before engaging, I test a clearer headline that repeats the visitor's intent before changing the CTA or layout.

Message mismatch is the strongest first test for me too. I'd compare the exact wording in the ad or search snippet with the first five seconds of the page, then test a headline that states the same problem, audience, and outcome. I'd judge the change with engagement and downstream conversion, not bounce rate alone, because a clearer headline can reduce clicks from poor-fit visitors while improving qualified ones.
