Does anyone else miss the days when SEO felt simpler?

I’m still pretty new to SEO, and I honestly feel like every time I learn something, Google changes the rules again.

One person tells me to focus on backlinks. Another says that content quality is all that matters. Someone else insists that technical SEO is the most important factor. Then AI enters the picture and suddenly everyone has a completely different opinion.

The funny thing is that SEO seems to be one of the only industries where people can follow completely different strategies and still end up with good results.

It’s likely the recent core update rolling out. Google has been aggressively adjusting its helpful content system to deprioritize generic, programmatic SEO.

Backlinks still carry weight, but building low-quality links without strong thematic relevance can actually trigger algorithmic penalties now.

It’s not about fear, it’s about risk mitigation. Sustainable organic growth relies on topical authority, not superficial link velocity.
