YouTube Shorts vs. Long-form video: Which should a new channel focus on?

Shorts are great for fast subscriber counts, but long-form video builds actual loyal viewers and watch time. If you started today, where would you focus first?
Starting with short videos is definitely easier to build momentum when you have zero subscribers. It helps you get comfortable with editing and scripting without spending days or weeks on a single project.

That early momentum is super encouraging, but converted subscribers from short clips rarely watch longer uploads later on. The algorithm seems to treat audiences for short and long content as two completely different groups. If your end goal is ad revenue and deep community engagement, long videos should still be the primary focus. You can always chop up your main video into smaller clips afterward to promote it.

Repurposing main uploads into quick teasers is actually the strategy that worked best for my growth. I upload one solid ten-minute video a week and clip out two or three highlights to post throughout the week. It brings in steady discoverability while keeping my main audience focused on the core channel content.

That hybrid strategy is solid, but it really depends on the niche you are in. Some topics like quick trivia, tutorials, or comedy sketches naturally thrive much better in vertical formats. If your content requires deep explanations or storytelling, jumping straight into detailed uploads will serve you much better in the long run. I spent months pushing quick clips for a technical channel and saw almost zero conversion to my full-length guides. Focusing entirely on long videos finally fixed my retention and subscriber loyalty.

Niche context really changes everything, so testing both early on is probably the safest bet. Once you see which format brings in viewers who actually stick around and comment, double down on that direction.
