Is anyone else weirdly addicted to LinkedIn?

I know people joke that LinkedIn is just Facebook with suits on, but I think the platform is genuinely fascinating.

You have people announcing that they got promoted, people turning completely ordinary experiences into life lessons, and people writing things like, “My 5-year-old daughter taught me the true meaning of leadership.”

Then there are the comments. Every post somehow has someone saying, “Congratulations! Well deserved!”

The strange thing is that I still open the app almost every day.

I’ve seen people find jobs, business partners, clients, internships, mentors, and even long-term friends through LinkedIn. At the same time, I’ve also seen people treat it like a stage where everyone is trying to look more successful than they actually are.
 
Glad I’m not the only one. I scroll through LinkedIn like it’s reality TV. Yesterday someone made getting rejected from an internship sound like a profound spiritual awakening 😭

Welcome to the corporate theatre, kiddo. I’ve been on that site since 2011 when it was just a digitized resume bank. Now everyone has to be a "thought leader" by Tuesday.

Haha! In my day, you proved your value by working quietly for five years before asking for a bump in pay. Now you write a 10-paragraph essay on "what dropping my morning coffee taught me about crisis management."

EXACTLY. "I spilled my latte today. Here are 5 key takeaways on agility." But honestly... as a fresh grad, it gives me so much anxiety. Do I actually need to start posting like that just to get hired?

Absolutely not. Please spare us. As someone who has hired hundreds of young adults, I promise you no sane hiring manager looks at a cringe post and thinks, "Ah yes, this is the strategic mastermind we need."

That is a massive relief to hear. My feed is constantly full of people my age posting "I’m humbled and honored to announce..." while I’m just trying to figure out how to make my resume look normal.

"Humbled and honored" is the biggest lie on the internet. They aren't humbled at all; they’re thrilled and flexing! Don't let the performative success fool you, most of them are just as terrified as you are.

Honestly, fair point! But how do you actually use it properly then? I did get one interview through a direct message once, so I know it works... it just feels like wading through toxic positivity.

That's the secret: it’s a tool, not a social destination. Use it to connect directly with real people, skip the main feed entirely, and ignore the influencers. Direct, polite outreach is how real careers get built.

Wait, do people actually respond to cold DMs for coffee chats? I always feel like I’m being super annoying if I reach out to older professionals.

Experienced professionals love giving advice. it makes us feel important! Keep it short, polite, and specific. If a fresh grad messaged me asking intelligent questions about my field, I’d reply in a heartbeat.

Hands down the ones where executives selfie-film themselves crying after laying off fifty people. "This was the hardest day of MY life." Absolutely disgraceful behavior.

Omg the Crying CEO post! I remember that! The internet roasted him for weeks. The disconnect from reality on there is insane sometimes.

I’ve setup my profile, but I keep getting stuck on the "About" section. Do I sound too corporate if I say "passionate about synergy" or too casual if I sound like a normal human?

If you use the word "synergy," I will personally find your profile and report it. Speak like a normal human being. "I solve X problem using Y skills." Keep it clean and direct.
