You are basically leasing the web address rather than owning it outright forever. Most registration platforms allow you to pay for anywhere between one and ten years at a time. If you do not pay before the expiration date arrives, your website and any linked business emails will instantly stop working.

Thankfully most registrars give you a grace period of about thirty days after expiration to renew at the normal price. Your site goes offline immediately during that window, but nobody else can steal the address from you just yet.

That safety window has saved me more than once when an old credit card on file expired! Once that initial grace period passes though, the address enters a redemption phase where the recovery costs jump up significantly. You usually have to pay a heavy penalty fee on top of the regular annual cost just to reclaim it. If you still do not pay during that stage, it eventually gets released to the public market.
