Free keyword tools give me crazy high difficulty scores for basic words. How do you find those hidden, easier keywords that real people search for?

I use difficulty scores only as a filter, then inspect the actual search results. Start with a specific problem plus modifiers such as ‘for beginners,’ ‘without,’ ‘alternative,’ or a location or use case. If the first page contains forum posts, thin listicles, outdated pages, or weak matches to the query, that is usually a better opportunity than the tool score suggests. I also check Search Console impressions for phrases where an existing page already ranks on page two, since those can be faster wins. The key is choosing a query you can answer more completely and directly than the current results.

Inspecting the SERP is the key step because difficulty scores cannot tell you whether the ranking pages actually satisfy the query. I’d also note the content format Google is rewarding, publish a tighter answer, and use Search Console queries after a few weeks to expand it around the language real searchers use.

That follow-up loop is where the real advantage appears. I also compare query clusters, not just single keywords: if several related long-tail terms share weak or outdated SERPs, one focused page can cover the core question and its close variants. Before publishing, I'd check whether the intent is informational, commercial, or local so the page format matches what searchers actually want.
