Is copying a successful format different from copying an idea?

I came across a brand using a video format that caught my attention, and it made me wonder if using a similar approach for another product would count as copying. The content and execution would be different, but the inspiration would still be there. At what point does taking inspiration from another marketer's work become copying something that should have been your own idea?

Not really. If we consider every similar format as copying, then inspiration would lose its meaning. A lot of creative work comes from seeing what others have done and finding ways to apply those ideas differently. As long as you are not taking their actual content and simply passing it off as your own, using a similar format with your own concept and execution is part of the creative process.

Copying a format is different from copying the actual idea. You can use the same structure or video style as another brand, but that doesn't automatically mean it will work for your product or audience. You still need to figure out how to make that format fit your own content. But when you copy the actual concept or idea, people are more likely to notice, especially if the similarities are too obvious. Taking inspiration is part of the creative process, but you should still bring something of your own to the table.

I guess it depends on the products involved. If you're using a similar format for two completely different products, I wouldn't necessarily call that copying. You're taking inspiration from an approach that worked for another brand and adapting it to something else. But if both brands are selling the same type of product and the content looks almost identical, then it could easily come across as copying rather than simply taking inspiration.

I agree with that. A lot of brands use familiar content styles and still manage to build their own identity. What matters is how they execute it and how people connect with their brand. You don't always have to come up with something completely new to get noticed. Sometimes, it's about knowing how to make an existing approach work for your own audience.

I believe since you are spinning it creatively yourself, that kind of copying is good.
