Amazon Associates vs. direct brand programs—which pays better?

Just got my blog set up and looking into affiliate offers. Amazon's payout percentages look pretty low these days, but everyone knows their brand. Do you stick with Amazon for the high trust, or join individual company programs for higher commissions?
