Starting out can be challenging when you don’t have past clients to showcase your skills. Would you create sample projects, work on personal ideas, or use another approach to build a portfolio that attracts potential clients?

I feel like this approach might come more naturally to artists and graphic designers, but not having client work doesn’t mean you can’t build a strong portfolio. You can include relevant certificates from seminars, programs you’ve participated in, sample projects, creative work, awards, and references. Anything that demonstrates your skills and knowledge in your field can strengthen your portfolio and give potential clients a better idea of what you can offer.

A client’s work doesn’t define the full extent of your skills or what you can achieve. There are plenty of applications and tools you can use to create your own portfolio and showcase what you’re capable of. Don’t hesitate to include your creative projects, awards, achievements, certifications, and other work related to your field. These can help demonstrate your abilities and give potential clients a clearer picture of your strengths, even before you gain professional experience.

You don't necessarily need client work to build a strong portfolio, but having real projects can definitely make it more convincing. You can start by offering your services to friends or relatives who might need them, since they can become your first customers. If that's not an option yet, focus on creating sample projects and consistently improving your work. The goal is to show potential clients what you can actually do and prove that your skills match the quality of work you're offering.

I think that it is entirely possible to build a portfolio without directly working with any clients. One could start by doing sample projects for companies that seem interesting and then put together a collection of these samples. Alternatively, it is also possible to pick a fictional company and develop a marketing campaign around it, outlining what changes would be made and why.

I had to build a portfolio before I got my first client to show that I had the knowledge and skills to do the work. I have attached samples of my work, relevant certificates, seminars attended and other credentials to prove my skills. Building a strong portfolio doesn’t always require client experience. You just need to show your skills and quality of work in a way that will make potential clients feel confident about what you have to offer.
