Is a Payment Notification Enough to Confirm a Transaction?

A buyer sends a payment screenshot, but the money hasn’t appeared in your account yet. With edited screenshots and fake notifications becoming harder to spot, how would you verify that the payment is legitimate before completing the transaction?

Honestly, not always. Some payment apps don't send notifications even when a transaction goes through, so the sender may need to open the app to confirm its status. I'd ask them to provide a screenshot of the completed transaction showing the reference number so I can check the details. Still, I'd make sure the payment actually reflects in my account before proceeding, since a screenshot alone isn't enough proof that the money has arrived.

I wouldn't rely on a payment screenshot alone because fake notifications can look very convincing. I'd ask for the transaction reference number and check whether the details match the payment record, but I'd still verify the money directly through my own account or payment app before completing the transaction. A reference number alone isn't proof, since scammers can reuse details from someone else's transaction. If the buyer refuses to cooperate or something doesn't add up, I'd be cautious. For in-person transactions, I'd also make sure the payment is confirmed before handing over the item, rather than trusting a screenshot or notification.
