Is free shipping really free for the seller?

Customers love seeing free shipping at checkout, but the delivery fee still has to come from somewhere. If you were running a small online store, how would you handle it? Would you include the cost in your product prices, require customers to reach a minimum order amount, or offer free shipping only during sales and promotions?

I'd probably set a minimum order amount for free shipping. That way, customers have a reason to add more items to their cart, and the seller doesn't have to shoulder the delivery fee for every small order. I wouldn't want to raise my product prices just to cover shipping because that might make the products look more expensive compared to other stores. You still have to make sure the offer makes sense for your profit, though.

I don't think free shipping is really free for the seller. Maybe it feels less costly when they have excess inventory or when it's part of a bigger promotion. Selling one item with free shipping might not make much of a difference in sales, but when you're selling in larger quantities, that's when you can see whether the extra orders actually help cover the cost. I guess it really depends on how many items they sell and whether the additional sales are enough to break even.

I think sellers usually have some kind of arrangement with shipping companies for these promotions. But does that mean they're losing money from offering free shipping? Not necessarily. They probably calculate these expenses ahead of time and factor them into their pricing or marketing budget. At the end of the day, it's still a business strategy, and they wouldn't keep offering it if it didn't make sense for them financially.
