Should employees be allowed to keep the work processes they personally developed when leaving a company?

Employees often find their own ways to make tasks easier or get work done more efficiently. But what happens when they leave the company? Should they be allowed to use those same methods in their next job, especially if they came up with them on their own? Or should the company have a say in how those processes are used?
